Gemini App Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users — What It Means for SEO

The Gemini app crossed 1 billion monthly users on August 11, 2026, Google confirmed in a blog post — making it the fastest-growing product in the company’s 28-year history and the 14th Google product to reach that scale. The milestone lands three weeks after separate data showed Gemini had already overtaken Perplexity as an AI referral traffic source, which matters more to site owners than the user count itself.

CEO Sundar Pichai announced the number on X, crediting Google Labs VP Josh Woodward and the Gemini team. The figure covers only the standalone Gemini app and web interface, not AI features inside Google Search, Workspace, or Android more broadly.

A Fast Climb From 400 Million to 1 Billion

Google’s own disclosures trace the climb. The pace has accelerated with each release cycle, particularly since the Gemini 3 rollout began in late 2025.

How People Are Actually Using It

Google’s post leans heavily on voice and multimodal usage. 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini rather than typing, and one in five Gemini Live sessions go beyond voice into live camera feeds or screen sharing. Gemini generates more than 150 million images daily, and 38% of school-related requests include an uploaded file. On Android, Gemini can now automate tasks such as booking a ride or reserving a table across more than 40 apps, though Google’s own help documentation places this “screen automation” feature in beta, limited to the US and Korea, select Pixel and Galaxy devices, and users 18 and older. Apple usage is notable too: Gemini has passed 100 million active users on iOS, with macOS users prompting roughly twice as often as other surfaces.

Why This Matters for SEOs and Publishers

A billion monthly users is a distribution story, not a traffic story on its own; Google didn’t disclose how many of those users click through to outside websites. But separate, independently gathered data answers that question directly. SE Ranking’s analysis of referral data from over 101,000 sites found Gemini’s referral traffic grew about 115% between November 2025 and January 2026, and by January was sending 29% more visitors than Perplexity globally, 41% more in the US; a full reversal from five months earlier, when Perplexity was sending roughly three times more traffic than Gemini. StatCounter’s independent tracking confirms the same shift: Gemini’s share of AI chatbot referrals nearly quadrupled between April 2025 and March 2026, overtaking Perplexity for the number-two spot behind ChatGPT.

The absolute numbers are still small; all AI platforms combined account for roughly a quarter of one percent of global web traffic, nowhere near what organic search sends. But the direction is what’s worth planning around, not the current scale. Gemini’s deep integration across Search, Android, Chrome, and Workspace gives it a distribution advantage the standalone AI chatbots don’t have, and that advantage is now showing up as real click-throughs, not just app opens. Reporting on how different assistants select sources also suggests Gemini leans toward citing official brand sites over forums or aggregator content, which raises the value of having clear, current, well-structured information living on your own domain rather than only in directory listings or social posts.

What to Watch Next

Two things worth tracking over the next few months: whether Gemini’s referral growth keeps compounding as more of the Android task-automation rollout lands outside its current two-country limit, and whether Google Search Console’s newer AI-visibility reporting eventually breaks out Gemini app referrals the way it now surfaces AI Overviews impressions. Until then, the most reliable read on whether Gemini sends you traffic is still your own analytics: check your referral sources for gemini.google.com and the Gemini app specifically, the same way you’d check for any other channel.
