A Google Business Profile usually stops showing up for one of five reasons: it was suspended, your name/address/phone details are inconsistent across the web, the categories don’t match what people are searching, competitors are simply outranking you on proximity and relevance, or the profile is too new and still in Google’s review queue. Search your exact business name in Google first, if nothing appears at all, that points to suspension, not ranking.
First, Confirm the Profile Is Actually Live
Sign in to business.google.com and check the profile’s status directly. “Not showing up” can mean two very different things: the profile is suspended or unverified (it exists but Google won’t display it anywhere), or it’s live but simply losing to competitors for the specific search you tried (a ranking problem, not a visibility problem). The fixes below are ordered from most severe to most common.
Reason 1: The Profile Was Suspended
If the dashboard shows a suspension notice, or the listing has vanished from Maps entirely including a direct name search, this is almost always it. Google tightened enforcement against fake locations, keyword-stuffed business names, and duplicate listings significantly in 2026, and legitimate businesses occasionally get caught in the same sweep. We covered what changed and how to appeal correctly in Google Business Profile spam: what the 2026 crackdown means.
Reason 2: NAP Inconsistency Across the Web
Google cross-checks your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) against how they appear on your website, directory listings, and social profiles. Mismatches, an old address on Facebook, a phone number that changed but wasn’t updated on Yelp, a slightly different business name spelling, weaken Google’s confidence in the listing and suppress how often it surfaces. Audit this with NAP consistency: why your details must match everywhere and clean up citations using local citations: where to list your business online.
Reason 3: Wrong or Missing Categories
Your primary category carries far more ranking weight than most owners realize. A general “Consultant” category when “Digital Marketing Agency” or “SEO Agency” fits better means Google simply doesn’t consider you a strong match for the searches you actually want to appear in. Review and correct your primary and secondary categories inside the dashboard, this is often a five-minute fix with an outsized effect.
Reason 4: You’re Being Outranked, Not Hidden
If the listing appears when you search your exact business name but not for the broader terms you want (“SEO agency near me,” for instance), this is a ranking problem. Google’s local algorithm weighs three factors: proximity to the searcher, relevance to the query, and prominence (reviews, links, and overall web presence). A profile with more recent reviews, more complete photos and posts, and a stronger backlink profile will consistently beat a thinner one at similar proximity. Our guides on how to rank your business on Google Maps and how to set up and optimize a Google Business Profile cover the specific levers that move this.
Reason 5: Service-Area Settings Are Misconfigured
If you serve clients remotely or across a wide area without walk-in customers at a physical address, your profile needs to be set up as a service-area business, with a hidden address and a defined service radius, not a storefront listing. A mismatched setup here confuses Google about where and when to show you. See using Google Business Profile as a service-area business for the correct configuration.
Reason 6: The Profile Is New or Was Recently Edited
Newly created profiles, and profiles with a recently changed name, address, or category, often go through a short Google review window before they display fully in search and Maps. This is usually a matter of days, not weeks. If it has been longer than two weeks with no change, treat it as one of the reasons above instead of waiting further.
Dual-Market Note: Lagos and Abuja vs a US City
Map-pack competition looks different across markets. Abuja and Lagos generally have lower listing density than an equivalent-size US city, which means a well-optimized profile can win visibility faster there, but it also means citation sources and review platforms differ, what works for NAP consistency in Chicago doesn’t map one-to-one onto Lagos. Our comparison of local SEO difficulty across Lagos, Abuja, and a mid-size US city and local SEO checklist for small businesses in Nigeria both go deeper on this.
If you’ve checked all six reasons and the profile still isn’t showing where it should, that usually points to a prominence gap that needs a structured local SEO plan rather than a single fix, that’s exactly what our SEO services are built around.
